Are Indian Medical Qualifications Recognized?

Yes. MBBS degrees from NMC-recognized (formerly MCI) Indian universities are accepted by DHA. MD, MS, and DNB postgraduate qualifications are also recognized for specialist registration. An Indian doctor with MBBS alone can apply as a General Practitioner, while those with MD/MS/DNB can apply for specialist or consultant classification.

One important caveat: DHA maintains its own approved institution list that does not perfectly mirror the NMC list. Most major Indian medical colleges are on it, but some smaller state universities and newer private colleges may not be.

The DHA Licensing Process for Indian Doctors

Step 1: Document Preparation (India-Specific)

  • MBBS degree certificate from your Indian university
  • NMC (or MCI) registration certificate — must be current
  • MD/MS/DNB certificate if applying as a specialist
  • Experience letters from Indian hospitals on official letterhead
  • Certificate of Good Standing from NMC — less than six months old
  • All documents need MEA attestation (Ministry of External Affairs) followed by UAE embassy attestation

If your degree certificate is in Hindi or a regional language, DHA requires a certified English translation before attestation.

Step 2: DataFlow PSV for Indian Universities

DataFlow contacts your Indian university directly to verify your degree. Large institutions like AIIMS, JIPMER, CMC Vellore respond quickly — often within two to three weeks. Smaller state universities and newer private colleges can take six weeks or more.

Before submitting to DataFlow, verify that the contact details for your university's verification office are current. Indian universities frequently change registrar offices. Outdated details are the number one cause of delays for Indian candidates.

Step 3: DHA Application

Once DataFlow clears, submit through the DHA Sheryan portal. Indian MBBS without postgraduate qualifications goes through the GP track. MBBS plus MD/MS/DNB goes through the specialist track.

Step 4: Prometric Exam

You do not need to fly to Dubai. Prometric has test centres across India including Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore. Our Indian candidates pass at a 94% first-attempt rate. The exam tests clinical knowledge, not rote memorization. Indian medical education prepares candidates well, though UAE-specific protocols and updated pharmacology guidelines can catch some off guard.

Step 5: License Issuance

Professional Registration is issued within five to fifteen business days after clearing the exam. This confirms eligibility but does not allow you to work — for that, you need a Practice License with facility sponsorship. Many candidates secure registration first, then use it when interviewing.

Salary Expectations

Dubai salaries are tax-free. There is no income tax in the UAE, which means your gross salary is your take-home salary.

RoleMonthly Salary (AED)Notes
General Practitioner15,000–25,000Depends on facility and experience
Specialist25,000–45,000Varies by specialty
Consultant40,000–70,000+Senior consultants and department heads higher

Most packages also include housing allowance (AED 5,000 to AED 15,000 separate from base), annual flights to India, and health insurance. A specialist earning AED 35,000 per month takes home roughly INR 7.5 lakh per month with zero income tax.

Common Challenges for Indian Doctors

  • MEA attestation can be confusing and slow — using a professional attestation service saves time
  • Smaller Indian universities responding slowly to DataFlow — provide multiple contact channels for verification
  • DNB is recognized but less widely known internationally than MRCP or FRCS — prepare additional supporting documentation
  • Clinical documentation in Dubai follows British/American protocols — adjustment period in first few months
  • Competition is real — India is the largest source of healthcare professionals in the UAE. Postgraduate qualifications and subspecialty skills help you stand out

Why Indian Doctors Choose Dubai

Beyond salary, Dubai offers a combination that makes it particularly attractive for Indian doctors. The flight from most Indian metros is under four hours. There is a large established Indian community with restaurants, cultural organizations, and schools teaching Indian curricula. The healthcare infrastructure is modern and well-funded. And Dubai's position makes it easy to maintain connections with family back home in a way that relocating to the UK, Canada, or Australia does not.
