How Much Does a Doctor Earn in Dubai?
A general practitioner in Dubai earns AED 20,000 to AED 35,000 per month, tax free. A specialist earns AED 35,000 to AED 60,000, and a consultant AED 60,000 to AED 100,000. Senior consultants and department heads exceed AED 100,000.
Notice what those three bands are keyed to. Not years worked, not employer, not even specialty at first pass. They are keyed to your DHA licence title, and that title is assigned to you during licensing based on your qualifications and verified experience. Understanding how the title is decided is worth more to your earnings than any salary negotiation, and it is the part almost every salary guide omits.
GP, Specialist, Consultant: The Title Decides the Pay Band
In the UAE, general practitioner, specialist and consultant are regulatory titles granted by the health authority, not job descriptions written by an employer. A hospital cannot pay you at specialist rate if DHA licensed you as a general practitioner, however experienced you are.

The practical consequence: if your qualifications place you near a title boundary, the single most valuable thing you can do before applying is make sure your postgraduate qualification and experience letters are documented in the form the authority expects. A file that supports a specialist title and one that does not can be separated by a single missing experience certificate, and the difference in pay band is roughly AED 15,000 per month.

A consultant neurosurgeon in Dubai earns approximately AED 90,000 to AED 150,000 per month, the highest band in UAE medicine. The premium reflects a very small pool of licensed candidates rather than higher patient volume.
What MBBS Holders Earn in Dubai
An MBBS without a postgraduate qualification is licensed as a general practitioner and earns AED 20,000 to AED 35,000 per month, tax free. That is a strong income by most international standards, and it is the entry point rather than the ceiling.
To move into the specialist band you need a recognised postgraduate qualification: an MD, MS or DNB from India, or an equivalent international board certification such as MRCP, MRCS, FRCR or an American board. The jump from general practitioner to specialist is the single largest proportional pay increase available in a UAE medical career, typically 60% to 75%.
If you are weighing whether to complete postgraduate training before moving to the UAE, the arithmetic usually favours completing it first. Working as a general practitioner in Dubai does not itself convert into a specialist title later.
Dubai vs Abu Dhabi vs the Northern Emirates
Abu Dhabi frequently pays slightly more than Dubai for consultant posts in government and large private hospitals, while Dubai has the deeper private and cosmetic market. The Northern Emirates run 20% to 30% below Dubai across all titles.

What Else Is in the Package
- Housing allowance, often AED 8,000 to AED 20,000 per month at consultant level, or provided villa accommodation
- Transport allowance or a company car at senior levels
- Annual return flights for you and, commonly, your immediate family
- School fee support for children, frequently offered at consultant level and worth negotiating
- Medical insurance for the family, mandatory for all UAE employees
- Malpractice insurance, normally carried by the employer — confirm in writing
- CME allowance and study leave for conference attendance
- End of service gratuity: 21 days basic pay per year for the first five years, 30 days per year thereafter
At consultant level the non-salary components are substantial. School fees for two children in a Dubai international school can exceed AED 100,000 per year, so an offer including school support can be worth more than a higher headline salary without it.
DHA Exam for Doctors and Licensing Costs
The DHA exam fee for physicians is approximately AED 700 to AED 900, paid directly to Prometric when you book your test date. Total DHA licensing for a physician runs approximately AED 3,700 to AED 4,600 once DataFlow verification, the application fee and licence issuance are included.

Doctors holding qualifications from certain jurisdictions, and those with recognised board certifications, may qualify for an exam exemption. Given the fee and the preparation time, checking your eligibility is worth doing before booking anything.

For Doctors Applying from India
Indian doctors are the largest single group of applicants we work with. An MBBS qualifies you for a general practitioner licence. An MD, MS or DNB in a recognised specialty, supported by adequate documented experience, qualifies you for a specialist licence and the higher pay band.
Three things to plan around. First, your postgraduate degree and every experience certificate must survive DataFlow primary source verification, which means the issuing institution has to respond, so start early. Second, an employment offer is normally required before the licence is issued, making the practical order eligibility first, job second, licence third. Third, budget two to four months from starting DataFlow to holding an eligibility letter.

- Secure the highest title your qualifications support at first submission, not later — this is the largest single lever on your income
- Complete postgraduate training before relocating; GP time in the UAE does not convert to a specialist title
- Add a recognised international board certification if you sit near a title boundary
- Negotiate housing and school fees separately from salary, especially at consultant level

Doctors routinely negotiate hard on salary and accept the title they are offered. It should be the other way round. The title sets the band; the negotiation only moves you within it.
